McLaren Production Centre
Client: McLaren Group
Architect: Foster + Partners
The S. Lucas Group completed a series of award-winning painting and fit out packages at McLaren Group’s new £40 million sports car production facility at Woking in Surrey, making full use of Muralplast MSP during the course of the project. The facility was formally opened by the Prime Minister, David Cameron.
A spray painting team from S. Lucas applied specialist resin floor treatments to provide a near mirror finish, as well as other decorative and protective treatments to various parts of the building including the main production halls.
However, one of the most challenging tasks was to treat all high level steelwork within 10 days in the main paint shop whilst the car production line continued its pre- production commissioning programme. To achieve this, Foster + Partners approved the team’s recommendation to adopt the use of Muralplast MSP (multisurface paint).
Although specifications had been clearly set by the architect, the surface treatment adviser recommended the use of Muralplast MSP because the water-based coating is low odour and kinder to the environment compared to the oil- based coating that was specified. It was also faster to apply because it only needed the one coat and would dry faster too. This allowed the team to vacuum-clean the steelwork and apply the coating whilst pre-production continued directly beneath.
The result was an extremely durable high quality finish completed on time and to McLaren’s exacting standards without any delay to McLaren’s own operations.
Muralplast MSP also proved to be a key factor in earning S. Lucas a “very highly commended” accolade at the Painting and Decorating Association’s Trophy Awards 2012 in the Industrial category and in also winning Construction News’ Specialists Awards 2012 in the finishing and fitout category for the work carried out at the production centre.
